Over 600 competitors filled the hills around Orton Bradley Park for one of the biggest (in terms of numbers) longer distance rogaine events to be held in New Zealand.

It was an unusual winter Sunday, it felt more like spring. The weather was ideal. Orton Bradley Park, in the Lyttleton harbour basin, was the perfect setting with its trails, waterfalls and stunning vistas. The event was also a fund raiser for New Zealand Red Cross. “It is awesome to be able to help such an amazing organisation and give participants the opportunity to explore this amazing part of Banks Peninsula”, said event director Nora Audra.

There were 4 course options, 6hr, 4hr, 2hr and a Wicked Kids Event. There was fun for everyone. From little to big kids, all ages, first timers to experts. Lots of enthusiastic women teams that are preparing for the Spring Challenge to be held later this year in Christchurch.

Teams had up to an hour to look to their maps and plan their routes. Lots of options and controls to choose. Hills could not be avoided but the climb reaped rewards (apart from the points) of spectacular views with a variety of terrain from open fields to native forest and pine and of course the dark green (to be avoided). The course had amixture of flat, steep and muddy tracks, technical terrain along the creeks.  The fantastic views were a great excuse for a pause to look across to see Lyttelton Harbour.

There was lots of positive feedback about the event:
"Thanks for a fabulous day yesterday. I just wanted to share a bit of a proud mum moment with you. My 12yo son Lachlan did his first big Rogaine with me yesterday. He made the calls on the nav and what an amazing result for the wee guy. 4th in Open Mixed! He has definitely got the big!” - Shenna Rowe.

Orton Bradley Park is a fantastic family friendly location, with large open spaces, fantastic sunsets, and park like settings. Over 25km of walking tracks cater for all ages and abilities. Only 30min from the centre of city. We are lucky to have so many cool places to play in Christchurch.

Everyone young and old, experienced and beginner had a great time and enjoyed the food  provided by Pita Pit and all the spot prizes (which included Inov8 Shoes, a Helicopter Trial Flight and a Suunto 5 watch)  afterwards.

Next year we will be back to explore a little bit more of the Orton Bradley area. Mark on your calendars - Wicked Winter 6hr Rogaine. Sunday 1st August. It’s going to be big, it’s going to be wicked!
