Australian Open Water Champs - 5k to Nick Sloman and Kareena Lee

Noosa’s dominance at the Australian Open Water Swimming Championships has continued on the final day of the competition, with Nick Sloman and Kareena Lee taking out the 5km open time trial events at Brighton Beach on Monday morning.


Adding to the 10km open titles they secured on Saturday, the pair were not only presented with gold medals, but they also received individual cheques for $2,500 as victors of the Men’s 5km Open Time Trial and Women’s 5km Open Time Trial.


The men kicked off proceedings at 7:30am on the last day, hitting the water in a staggered start for the time trial. Second to cross the finish line behind 22-year-old Sloman – who clocked 54:39.86 – was Canadian Jon McKay who touched in 55:21.95. As the second fastest Australian to complete the course, Kawana Waters’ Bailey Armstrong (55:33.53) achieved the silver medal, while Belgravia’s Hayden Cotter scored bronze in 55:43.41.

In a battle between Australian distance queens, TSS Aquatic teammates Madeleine Gough and Kiah Melverton placed behind Lee – who posted 56:33.31 – in the women’s event, recording 56:36.55 and 57:12.41 to capture silver and bronze respectively. The silver medal marked Gough’s second for the meet, after claiming the title of Australian champion in the Women’s 5km Open yesterday.


In the final races of the day – the hotly contested team relays – Revesby Workers (A) (1:03:55.723) claimed the top spot on the podium in the Mixed 14-15-years 4x1.25km Relay, while Hunter (1:04:25.607) claimed silver and Carlile (A) received bronze (1:05:34.650).


The Mixed 4x1.25km Open Relay it was TSS Aquatic (A) who nabbed bragging rights and the gold medal in 58:18.577, with Kawana Waters (A) (59:33.523) nabbing silver and TSS Aquatic (B) (1:00:20.463) securing bronze.


TSS Aquatic received the coveted spoils of 'Champion Club’, following some strong and consistent performances over the weekend from the likes of Madeleine Gough, Bianca Crisp and Moesha Johnson.
