The Challenge Wanaka team in conjunction with Wanaka Medical have created a new challenge for next February, which everyone can participate in, the Wanaka Medical Social Triathlon. Based on a Challenge Family event in Almere Holland, this is an event to help encourage people to get active and helps promote healthy lifestyle changes for people across the whole spectrum of our community.

The event consists of a 15 minute pool swim or 30 minutes Aquarobics or 30 minute Pilates at the Wanaka Recreation centre, followed by a Coffee or Tea. Then a non-competitive social ride from the Recreation Centre to Albert Town and along the beautiful Outlet track to the new Watersports centre for a lunch prepared by the Aspiring Rotary club, which is included in the entry fee. Then onto the final challenge a 2.5 km walk along the Waterfall Creek track and back to the finish, totalling 5km.

Dr Andrew McLeod, Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka Trustee, local GP and talented Age Group Triathlete has been integral in the creation of this new offering. “Exercise is a great medicine and helping motivate people to become, and remain active, which is a priority for all primary healthcare professionals.

“The new Challenge Wanaka Social event is an opportunity for folk wanting to get fit for an achievable goal. Although the event is based around a triathlon, there is no competition and completing the course will be a lot of fun and provide a sense of accomplishment. See you out there.”

The event will be held on 14th February 2021 and open to over 23 year olds. People can ride any type of bike they would like, including e-bikes. Entry fees have been kept as low as possible to encourage participation, costing $25 which includes a Keep Cup, a reusable drink bottle, coffee or tea, lunch, pool entry and water and fruit at the finish of the event.

The first entry has been confirmed as Deputy Mayor Callum McLeod and he will be joined by motivational mentors at the event; Dr Andrew McLeod, Chrissy Gibb multisport legend and Physio, Marie Roxburgh keen cyclist and local Age Concern Social worker and Janice Hughes community contributor, avid mountain biker and past Rotary District Governor.
