Changes set to revamp cycling’s Vantage national road championships
More action and a new date will provide an exciting backdrop to the 2020 Vantage Road Cycling National Championships in Cambridge.
The Championships will take place from 14 to 16 February and form part of the annual RIDE Festival in Cambridge.

The race date, some five weeks later than has been the tradition, has come about after discussions with New Zealand’s professional and domestic riders to better fit with the early season World Tour events in Australia.
The new date will give domestic and World Tour riders the opportunity to gain race fitness in key national and UCI events that take place in January across New Zealand and Australia, before contesting national titles.
The other key change for the event, which Cambridge will host for the next four years, is the scheduling of road races for males and females to be staged on the same day. For a number of years, the elite and under-23 women’s road race was held on Saturdays, a day after the time trials, leaving little time for recovery.
However next year the time trials will be staged on Friday 14 February and both road races for males and females, set for Sunday, allowing for the RIDE Festival’s Gran Fondo ride for recreational and club riders, taking place as part of the championships on the Saturday.
This provides cycling fans with a unique opportunity to ride the elite course the day before the championship race and to stay to watch the elites on Sunday.
While the exact course is still to be finalised, they will include some of the region’s well-known climbs and scenic country side and will also incorporate circuits of Cambridge town to give spectators more chances to see the action up close.
Full details of the Vantage Road Cycling National Championships courses, including the RIDE Festival Gran Fondo and the party in the park for road race day, will be released shortly.
