Colin Rolfe – Runs his last trail
When it came to trailrunning there weren’t many who could foot it with Colin Rolfe, especially in the late 90’s when the sport was still in it’s infancy.
Rolfe was a pioneer, winning New Zealand’s premier races, the Kepler Challenge and Abel Tasman Coastal Classic.
Sadly on October 24th he passed away suddenly of natural causes.
On the local scene he was a loyal supporter of Nelson Events and Nelson Striders, especially the Abel Tasman Coastal Classic having finished every year since the event’s 1994 inception.
Along with Chris Gates and Owen Rowse he notched up number 24 just two weeks ago.
He was certainly a very humble guy, but highly competitive whenever he stood on the start line. In his elite days everything was precisely planned and put into place. Even woollen hats were weighed before being put into his compulsory gear bumbag.
On the trails he could never be described as quiet. His racing partner would be subject to continuous commentary throughout the event and fellow competitors at the front end of the field bombarded with encouraging comments as he shot past them.
Marshalls, safety teams and organisers were always thanked.
Colin’s positive energy, drive and encouragement will be remembered along the Marahau boardwalk (the end of his last trail race) on Sunday November 12th at 11.00am. All friends and fellow runners are welcome. Call Graeme West, 027 247 8880 for details.
