Six of the best for Hunter and Birkett in junior swim meet

Manawatu’s Michan Hunter and Hawkes Bay’s Sarah Birkett enjoyed golden success at the New Zealand Division II Swim Competition that finished in Rotorua today.

They both won six gold medals in the competition that attracted swimmers from over 100 clubs to the Rotorua Aquatic Centre.

Hunter (Palmerston North club), 16, won the 100m butterfly in the final session to make it six wins from six races in the male competition.

Others boys with perfect records were a pair of 13 year olds. Mannix Fraser from Oamaru won his four events on the first two days while Jack Bruning from Huntly won four from four also.

Birkett, 14, from Napier Aquahawks won the most medals overall with seven including six gold and a bronze in the female competition. She finished with wins in the 100m butterfly and 400m individual medley on the final day.

Madison Fuller, 14, from St Peters in Cambridge won six medals with five gold, and finished the day with a win in the 50m freestyle and bronze in the 100m butterfly.

North Shore’s Hannah Anderson enjoyed the perfect competition with five wins from five races. The 15 year old sealed her week with a win in the 50m freestyle today.

The competition was well spread with 74 swimmers enjoying at least one victory each.

North Shore dominated the club competition with 2236 points to finish ahead of St Peter’s on 1611 and Coast on 1407, while the top South Island club was Selwyn from Rolleston with 1,222.

The leading clubs were: North Shore 2236, St Peter’s 1611, Coast 1407, Selwyn 1222, Howick Pakuranga 1126, Raumati 1074, United 1072, Swim Rotorua 1061, Hillcrest 1029, Masterton 1017.
