It will be a case of “take two” for the Trust House North Island Team Series being staged in the Wairarapa this weekend.

The first race of the five-race series was cancelled last Sunday due to atrocious weather conditions, however Race Director Jorge Sandoval is expecting a full field to line up again this Sunday for the 102 km race that begins and finishes in Alfredton, north of Masterton.

Leading the charge in category one is Black Spoke Pro Cycling Academy, New Zealand’s only Union Cycliste Internationale professional team. The team will be ably led by Aaron Gate, gold medal winner at the 2019 UCI track racing champs in Cambridge and Brisbane and the 2019 New Zealand Cycle Classic tour winner. Gate will be joined by top hill climber James Oram, who led the Mitchelton Bike Exchange Continental team on the Asian circuit last year and is a previous stage winner at the UCI 2.2 New Zealand Cycle Classic and former junior world champion Luke Mudgway. Also, in the team is Ethan Batt, Josh Kench, Ari Scott, Xander White, Kiaan Watt and Dylan McCullough.

“I’m expecting to see some exciting racing from the Black Spoke team,” says Jorge. “They have remained in the Wairarapa since last weekend for an intensive training camp getting out on our rolling country roads and clocking up some miles in preparation for a series of upcoming races. It’s been great to see the team out in force and enjoying some of the region’s warm hospitality.”

In addition, Black Spoke will join the Athletics Cycling Masterton (ACM) bunch ride on Saturday morning ahead of Sunday’s race.

“What a great opportunity for our local riders to rub shoulders and ride alongside a UCI gold medalist, a former junior world champion and a number of future elite riders,” says Jorge.

Teams to watch on Sunday are East Coast NI and Fitlab 2 in category two, Kapiti Cycling Club and Optimal Performance team in category three and being a new category in this year’s series, any of the teams in category four could produce a winner.

Jorge paid tribute to the generous support from sponsors Trust House and wishes all riders this best this weekend when they complete a 102km lap starting and finishing in Alfredton School and racing via Pa Valley Rd and Mangaone Rd.

This year’s Trust House team series has attracted 237 riders from Auckland, Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Wellington and Wairarapa, who will make up 26 teams across four categories.

With Covid-19 restrictions still in place, all riders will need to sign in for contact tracing purposes and adhere to good hygiene practises. Jorge has signed up to the ‘Voluntary Code for Events’ which follows best practice expectations, based on Ministry of Health guidance to reduce COVID-19 related risks. He has also taken advise from Cycling New Zealand about best practise for holding cycling events.
